7 September 2010 The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns, in the strongest terms possible, the continued and illegal detention, incommunicado, of a Somali online reporter at the commercial port town of Bossasso by the Puntland Intelligence Service (PIS). The reporter, Yusuf Ali Adan, until his capture three months ago in June 2010, was working for a news website, www.somalifans.net. NUSOJ fears for his safety and his well-being. more |

FAJ and African Union Commit to Promoting Safety and Protection of African Journalists |

African journalists today adopted a declaration calling for governments, the African Union journalists’ trade unions and the international community to join forces in promoting the safety and protection of journalists in Africa. The Addis Ababa Declaration was adopted at the conclusion of a two-day regional workshop on the “Safety and Protection of African Journalists” hosted by the African Union Commission and organized by the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) at the African Union Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Puntland court hears journalist appeal |

Journalist Abdifitah Jama Mire was brought before Bari regional Court of Appeal in Bossasso of Puntland Regional State of Somalia on Saturday, 4 September, after 22 days of detention in central prison. The journalist, Director of Horseed Radio in Bossasso was sentenced 6 year in jail and $500 fine on 14 of August 2010. Family members, journalists, friends and relatives of Abdifitah attended the hearing of Saturday in the court of appeals and his lawyers. More |
