The ADF Management Committee is pleased to invite ADF members to apply to participate in a 4-day conference on "Democracy, Conflict Transformation and Post-War Social Reconstruction: Lessons Learned in Africa" that will take place in Conakry, Guinea, on 5-8 December, 2005. The ADF will organize this conference in collaboration with Rights & Democracy (Montreal, Canada-based) and Guinean Organization for Human and Citizens' Rights (OGDH). The primary objective of the conference is to to deepen understanding of post-war social reconstruction processes and the concept of conflict transformation and to develop practical strategies of building democracy in conflict/war-torn societies in Africa by providing democracy activists with an opportunity to learn from each other about their own experience in post-conflict democracy building. The following themes will be covered through presentations and workshops during the conference:
Countries represented at the conference will include:
Angola, Central Africa Republic, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Togo, and Uganda.
Language used at the conference: English and French Eligibility: Applicants must be from one of countries listed above and have an affiliation with a civil society organization working on democracy-related issues, particularly six issues highlighted above. Application Process: Interested individuals are required to complete and return the attached application form with a draft 2 to 3-page presentation that you would make at the conference. If you are accepted to attend the conference, you will be asked during the conference to make a brief presentation on your analysis of conflict and post-conflict challenges in your country. The presented paper should be approximately 700 words, and it should include a brief history of your country’s conflict (identifying root causes of conflict) and your organization’s work on democracy issues in a conflict/post-conflict environment (identifying challenges and explaining how your organization overcomes those challenges). The draft should also indicate what you would like to learn from others at the conference.
